Not all mobile computing devices are created equal to your direct need.  There are a variety of choices that filter down into a small number of categories which include smartphones, tablets, netbooks or laptops.

When do you need the smart-phone?

For many of us a smartphone has become a way of life for base communication. Not only is it our telephone, but a link to the web wherever we are (as long as you can get a signal). Programs run on these devices are called “apps” and have a variety of useful to entertaining purposes. They hold a charge for a longer deal of time then a computer in most cases and can be great for that quick look up on the web. They also have a variety of designs. Watch out for specific keyboard, memory and screen size features that best suits your purpose.

Why do you need a tablet?

A tablet may be considered a larger version of a smartphone by some, and it is still small enough to fit into most bags and briefcases. Tablets are very functional in that it can be used to browse the web and can even be used with a pen to write out notes for later transcription. A tablet is more of a secondary portable device that may need to be connected to a computer to add applications or transfer data.

Why would you need a netbook?

If you have a full functioning computer at home that you mostly use, but need that on the go, lightweight and easily portable option the netbook is the way to go. A netbook does not have a CD or DVD drive but otherwise functions similarly to a full sized laptop. If you need a quick solution that will let you utilize your base programs (which can be quickly added with an external cd drive) and check your email on the go this is for you. If you don’t mind a smaller screen and something less conspicuous to bring into a meeting the netbook is for you.

Why would you need a laptop?

A mobile computer that has all the bells and whistles including a CDROM is a solution for the person who is always on the go and prefers to lounge casually while performing their digital tasks. They usually have a fuller size screen then their counterpart options and perform functions at a faster pace. If you don’t want to work from a standard desktop computer this is the next best thing. Cost is a big factor in what you actually get and can run from the low hundreds to thousands in cost. If weight is a concern for you be watchful of the added pounds a larger screened laptop can bring with it and make sure to purchase a correctly sized carrying case to keep it protected.

Note: No matter what device(s) you decide to use make sure to purchase the extended warranty and replacement plans as well. The smaller the device…the easier to lose or drop. Anything that is considered “portable” has an invisible warning label that accompanies it!

Most companies and individuals alike have joined the social media train, and a train it is. Perhaps you started off with a Facebook or Twitter account, and then you add on trains from there.
